The Encuentro ELE-UK 2017 was held on June 15th and 16th in the city of Glasgow, in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde.
This year, and for the first time, we offered two days of activities combining social events and talks. On Thursday 15th participants enjoyed a guided tour to some of the most remarkable sites in Glasgow. Many thanks to Sergio Romero Bueno for such a pleasant and enjoyable experience!
The tour was followed by a fantastic workshop facilitated by our first keynote speaker, Encina Alonso, with the title- “Despertando las estrategias durmientes”. After this, participants in the Encuentro were very warmly welcomed by the Glasgow Provost at a reception in the City Chambers. Later, we had the pleasure to taste some bits of the excellent Glaswegian cuisine at an excellent local restaurant. For those who wanted to enjoy the Scottish night further, there was some whisky tasting in a local pub nearby.
We started early on Friday, and after being welcomed by Prof. Douglas Brodie, Dean of Humanities, and by Ms Beatriz Caballero, Spanish Subject Leader at the University of Strathclyde, we attended a most informative talk by our second keynote speaker, Olga Esteve, on the topic “Mas allá del enfoque comunicativo”.
For the rest of the day we had the opportunity to attend a wide variety of communications and workshops offered by colleagues from UK and Spanish institutions, such as Universidad de Granada, Universidad de Valencia, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Instituto Cervantes (Manchester y Leeds) the Modern Language Centre-King’s College London, University of Cardiff, Durham University, Queen Mary’s University, University of Manchester and University of Leeds.
Our third keynote speaker, Jose Plácido Ruiz Campillo, presented his fascinating talk “Actitudes que nos impiden entender la gramática. De la espada de fuego a la Gestalt”. The Encuentro met its end with a toast to all participants, sponsors and organizers, with an excellent wine and Spanish delicatessen offered by Junta de Castilla y León.
A big thank you to Elena Solá and Lydia Acosta for the fantastic work done and for the great support offered in the organization of the Encuentro 2017 in Glasgow. Special tanks also to our photographer reporter, Raquel Martinez Martín, for documenting in images the whole event.
We hope to see you all next year on June 14th and 15th for the Encuentro 2018 in collaboration with the Modern Language Centre, at King’s College, London.
